Day 10: Windjana to Silent Grove

We got off to a good start this morning. Up early and packed before an early morning walk through Windjana Gorge. As an intro to the Kimberley it is spectacular. From the outside you see the walls to the gorge, but to enter you walk through a gap in the rocks and it all seems to open up before you…  Ammonite fossils in Devonian reef, and teeming with Freshwater crocs (so no swimming)   Many people walked the full 7km return loop which is definitely better seen the morning before the full strength of the Sun is felt.

The start of Windjana Gorge

Lots of Freshies.

If yesterday felt like an intro to the Kimberley by keeping us mostly on Tarmac, today was the first day properly on the Gibb River Road. Dirt, corrugations and twisty up through the King Leopold Ranges. But we knew tonight's campsite might be popular, so an early arrival to secure a spot was a good thing. Then it was only a short time later 10km run into Bell Gorge. If Windjana was good, then Bell got off to a shaky start. You walk along a tiny creek for a while before getting to the upper pool. It's only as you get here that the gorge opens up and you start to hear the water. It's then a short but steep scramble over the hill following a well signposts track, and you below the falls. And, boy is it worth it!!! In fact, unless you have a very young family, or are a bit shaky on your feet, you'd be mad not to do this. Absolutely awesome. I've taken a few shots, but they don't seem to do it justice. It's not just the main pool below the falls. There another, then a small set to falls, then another pool, then it disappears around a bend in the river and I didn't have the time or energy to follow it. However, you get the idea...

Back to camp for a quiet night with a few glasses of chateau cardboard to wash down some pork chops. A very chilled evening. I wonder what tomorrow brings?
