A busy couple of days, but a good couple of days. We had to
rise really early at Charnley River to make sure we got to Mornington around
7am as they only have spaces for 50 people camping per day. As its nearly 99km
from The Gibb into Mornington, there is a radio at the junction for guests to use to check
camping availability as it can't be booked in advance.
If the drive in is an indication, then this should be
special… Like Charnley, Mornington is run by the AWC. But it feels very
different. Where Charnley was open camping, Mornington feels much more like
bush camping as sites are spread along the river. Mornington also has luxury
tents and a bar (at reasonable prices!) and restaurant that produces a set menu
every night.
We snagged a good spot, next to a couple of ladies from
Melbourne. After a quick set up to secure our spot, we went for a wander to the
closest gorge and water hole, both of which lay down a decent 4wd track. Sir John
Gorges very long and split into 3 kayaks lead pools. Pretty but not a patch on
Grevillea or Bells. Blue Bush is a really pretty swim spot nicely tucked away
amongst the trees. Before we knew it, it was time to head back to camp and our
treat of eating out. Roast Lamb.
Before arriving we had planned to only spend one day here,
then head for Mt Barnett area and Manning Gorge. This plan was quickly changed
to give us a second night here followed by a canoe hire on day 2 at Dimond (not
a typo) Gorge. A beautiful gorge definitely worth seeing if just for the
geology!! A brief drive into Cadjeput showed it to be a good swim location. A
day of exercise deserves good food and beer. At least I got good beer.

Close out the day with a really good presentation on the
work of AWC that managed to be very pragmatic and didn't preach. Impressive.
Retire to camp as tomorrow is going to be a big day…
